HISTORY

Swamji  left home as a young boy to pursue his higher calling. An early confirmation of this was when he got onto a train without a ticket.  As the ticket collector was coming around, he closed his eyes and prayed. Miraculously, when he re-opened his eyes the ticket collector had gone, reaffirming his faith.

He joined a group of Sadhus (religious ascetics who have renounced the worldly life) living in caves. He deprived his body of food and water, disciplining his mind to the extreme. Thus, he became a Yogiraj Tapaswi (one who can control the senses, will and mind through severe penance).

His connection with our community dates back to the 1920’s. He used to visit the Late Mr. Purshotamdas Sabnani and his wife the Late Mrs. Parpati Sabnani. She was one of his first disciples. Her mother the Late Mrs. Lalibai Kalachand Daryanani also lived with them and personally served him with love. Her sister Mrs. Lata Chanrai and daughter Mrs. Mona (Ratna) Vaswani remember those days fondly when he used to stay in their house in Bombay for a month at a time. He would read the Ramayana every day for an hour and  would stress the understanding of maryada (decorum or good conduct and respect for elders). They have a vivid memory of Swamiji as a young, black bearded man seated on a sofa being garlanded and Parpati Sabnani taking diksha (making him her guru). He went on to becoming a guru to most of the Sabnani family. His association expanded to other Sindhi families. The land in Hardwar where he built his Kutiya (hut) was donated to him by the Late Mr. Kishinchand Chellaram. The land stretched from Kacchi Ashram to Sadhubela in Saptsarovar, Hardwar. Swamiji gave away most of the land and retained only a small piece where he lived in the most simple, austere way.

Over the years, Swamiji had a premonition that Narsingh Bhagwan had expressed his wishes to be present in Vishram Kutir. In order to fulfil his aspiration, the Late Mr. Satramdas Sabnani and the Late Mr. Nandu Hirdaramani funded the conversion of Vishram Kutir to Narsingh Mandir.

The extended Sabnani family and in particular, the Late Mrs. Padma Hirdaramani and her sister Mrs. Mona (Shanta) Mulchand became his most devout followers. Their families and friends came to visit Swamiji in Hardwar. The Late Mrs. Indra Dalamal also took naam-daan. Others whose lives were influenced by Swamiji were: The Late Mrs. Indra Sabnani, Mrs. Mira K Mahtani, Mrs. Usha Sabnani, Miss Shakun Melwani, Mrs. Jyoti Daryanani and Mrs. Bhagwanti Mohan to name a few.

He was closely associated with the Late Mr. Ram Punjwani and his wife who lived in Hardwar. They were sincere followers who visited the ashram frequently. A memorial statue of Swamiji was donated and placed in the temple by them. Mr. Mahesh Ram Punjwani, their son, is carrying on his family’s good work today by facilitating the daily operations of the ashram.
